FAQs

What are your areas of specialization?

I specialize in working with members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who deal with religious or moral OCD (also known as scrupulosity). Almost all of my clients have other symptoms in addition to scrupulosity, and I am experienced in treating the full range of OC spectrum and anxiety disorders.

Do you offer in-person or virtual sessions?

I offer virtual telehealth sessions that are conducted via secure video conference for residents of California, Utah, Arizona Idaho, Texas, Louisiana, and Florida.

Can you see clients located anywhere?

I can see clients located in California, Utah, Arizona, Idaho, Texas, Louisiana, and Florida.

How long is a therapy session, and how often do I need to go?

Therapy sessions are typically 50 minutes long. The frequency of sessions varies based on your needs and goals. Initially, weekly sessions are recommended, but we can discuss a schedule that works best for you during our first appointment.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes, therapy is confidential. Your privacy is of utmost importance, and I adhere to strict ethical and legal guidelines to protect your information. There are some exceptions, such as if you pose a danger to yourself or others, which we will discuss during our first session.

Do you do exposure therapy?

Yes, I specialize in using exposure and response prevention (ERP), which is the gold standard treatment for OCD. I have completed the International OCD Foundations’s Behavior Therapy Training Institute, which is the premier training program for ERP in the United States. I regularly combine ERP with other evidence-based treatments including acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

What if I don't want to do exposures?

I regularly work with individuals who don't want to do exposures or can't tolerate them using an evidence-based treatment called Inference Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT). I-CBT treats OCD by targeting the faulty reasoning that leads to obsessions. It helps individuals recognize and challenge their distorted inferences, such as overestimating threats or confusing imagination with reality. By shifting focus from compulsions to trust in their own perceptions, I-CBT reduces OCD symptoms and breaks the cycle of doubt.

What is the best treatment for scrupulosity?

The best treatment for scrupulosity is evidence-based OCD treatment, especially Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Inference-Based CBT (I-CBT). These approaches help people learn to understand their OCD, manage their anxiety and, ultimately, find peace in their spiritual lives.

What are the kinds of issues my clients most often face?

My clients are worried that they're not worthy, not good enough or not living up to church standards. Many also struggle in their most important relationships, including wondering whether they've married the right person. They also struggle with other OCD themes in addition to scrupulosity and are worried that their anxiety and perfectionism are getting in the way of living the life they want.

How does SPACE treatment work?

SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) works by coaching parents to reduce accommodating behaviors (like reassurance, avoidance, or enabling rituals) while increasing calm, supportive responses to their child’s anxiety. By changing how parents respond, children learn that they can tolerate distress and anxiety decreases—even without direct therapy for the child.

Does scrupulosity ever go away?

Scrupulosity may never completely go away, but it is possible to learn to effectively manage it so you are able to live the kind of life you want. For most people, this involves some combination of therapy and medication.

What is your cancellation policy?

If an appointment is cancelled with less than 24 hours notice, you will be charged the full cost of the session.
